Talk to a professional

Not everyone needs professional help to start feeling more positive again, however if you do need to talk to someone here are a few tips:

Everything you discuss in your appointment is treated in the strictest confidence and will not be shared with anyone who is not directly involved in providing your care, without your prior consent – unless your safety, or the safety of others, is at risk.

If you are not well enough to attend your appointment, please let your Practitioner know as soon as possible, if you can. If you are unable to cancel your appointment, you will receive a standard computer-generated letter confirming that you have not attended and asking you to rebook. Please do so as it’s important to continue with your support whilst you need it.

Use a piece of paper, to write down important questions or information that you would like to ask or discuss with your Practitioner, and take it with you to your next appointment. It’s easy to forget what you wanted to ask when you are in your appointment.

Keep a diary of your feelings and the events that may have triggered that feeling. If it’s helpful, you can take this to your appointment for further discussion.

This is the latest version and 2026 update to the mental wellbeing toolbox first developed in 2022. The toolbox was developed in partnership with the Recovery College and the support of their Lived Experience Group and Health Watch. It is a Healthy Places and Communities partnership publication from Amplius, bpha, Peabody, BeActive and Public Health (Bedfordshire and Milton Keynes) and is supported by the Chartered Institute for Housing.
